To True Ancestors

I wonder if, when first she gazed, And saw how women were made taut Yet softened,Sappho stopped quite short, And stood there, watching, quiet, dazed. When first he saw Saint Bacchus, I Wonder if Sergius stopped for air, If he was rooted solid there, And whistled softly, love in eye, I wonder if, when Tatchell first, Laid eyes on men, so newly minted, Found his voice and duly hinted, At freedom, hismost unquenched thirst, Ms Duffy, did you feel the pang? That hopeless love-lorn will to try That asks so boldly to defy Your best friend's hungeredsexual tang? I found you all, in letters read In politics and thirst for kin Tell me you had that urge within That loyalty the bastards fed, Were you the ones who'd ably tend theirbroken hearts, brush tearsaway? Promised to be the one who'd stay, Until the heartbreak marked the end.
