Tree Rings
They always say, “Oh you’ve grown so tall!” That’s just an expression of the shrinking What exclamations would they make If they knew what I’m now thinking If the universe is expanding Than it must have once been small I now mock obsessions of my past Today should I care at all? With this very stroke of pencil I have realized That in as little as a day I’ll read this poem with different eyes Why do I even put effort into it? I know it will end up like all the things I ever thought were important. It’s like tree rings Count every one Add them up They grew well But the tree still gets chopped down.
