When I'm Near You

The blue ice in your eyes makes me soar through glacial skies, the cool tones in your voice inflame my heart. No other woman's heat could ever melt, devour, defeat raised icy barricades while we're apart. But... when I'm near you held safely in your loving arms all the pieces of our longing come together, and when I'm here with you you overwhelm me with such calm that there is only our belonging here forever. My ears have never heard a great extravagance of words that might have dripped like honey from your tongue and when you're not in sight, when foolish fears take wing for flight it takes me all my strength to carry on. But... when I'm near you held safely in your loving arms all the pieces of our longing come together, and when I'm here with you you overwhelm me with such calm that there is only our belonging here forever. It started out life as a song, then I placed it in a poetry site, without extra chorus and was told it is definitely as much a poem as a song, then I added chorus back in for this site, so you won't find it too odd that the chorus/verse is in different metre and rhyme scheme. These days, I write a lot more lyrics than poems but I hope I am bring poetry to songs, rather than abandoning one for the other.

Started writing poems at age 14, lyrics a lot later and am still doing both to my astonishment. Along the way I wrote a couple of novels and they are published by Amazon. I am gloriously happy in my marriage, after 50 years and I am relieved to say...
