"Why do the Russians smile so little?" (my translation from Russian)

Here's my attempt at translating a poem that's gained popularity/generated lots of discussions on Russian social networks & TV channels. The name of the author is at the moment unknown (judging from the original text, it could be someone from the Russian rap scene) Why don't the Russians smile more? Our feelings are real, they're not a show It goes on; pours, melts, smokes and kindles "Why do the Russians smile so little?" At the heart of the most enlightened worlds, The darkest of black holes are born. But, none of that really matters. "Why do the Russians smile so little?" - that's what counts. Trying to drown out other questions? An old trick, partners. - Hey, Russians, why do you smile so little? We do smile... When things go as we hoped; We smile when we meet a kindred soul; And, and the end of every long winter, we do smile, ever so little A thin stalk rises up through heavy lumps - that's how the earth smiles; You stand on it, feeling the strength with your feet, and the smile lits your eyes We smile when new cities appear on icy plains When our guy flies first into space When a tired soldier comes back victorious, a grin on his face ***** There could be other English translations of this poem out there already. The name mystery could be the author's way of upping the hype, or it could be due to author's unwillingness to appear "too patriotic". Or, it could be some other reasons. The poem deals with such issues as the ongoing biased/unrealistic portrayal of Russia in the West (which never really ceased, only changed forms through the ages), and the refusal of the West to truly admit own mistakes (such as giving birth to fascism/supporting neo-nazism) and preferring to remain blind to some things, such as the deaths of civilians in Donbass at the hands of Ukrainian army since 2014
