Yearning Flight
The young one begins Soaring alone for the first time The eyes rake the ground This eagle has learned to fly A hare curves her way In a relief from the trees But the eagle wishes to make Prey of the instinct to flee Swooping down low The eagle's talon's tear His aim a little wrong But severely torn, the hare Lies bleeding Fighting for her life This eagle is screaming For he wants her tonight The wind blows strong The gods now unappeased The eagle has done wrong He's warned to flee But he continues in his pursuit Youth is an arrogant fool The hailstones strike The hare finds a bush The eagle falls low His wings bruised and crushed He cannot take flight The wind is too strong The gods justified The hare must live on The eagle sees his mistake He wishes he could repair As hail chains him to the earth The youth wishes he'd not taken air
